For a decade, the Sony 1000X Series has redefined what premium listening should feel like - combining industry-leading noise cancelling, immersive sound and refined comfort into one iconic lineup.
Behind every generation lies a story of relentless innovation, meticulous craftsmanship and a passion for bringing listeners closer to the music they love. We explore how the 1000X Series evolved into one of Sony’s most celebrated audio legacies.

Vision
The 1000X Series was born from a simple idea: Music should reach you at its absolute best, anytime, anywhere.
To deliver the experience of enjoying music in every everyday moment—including while on the move - without being disrupted by noise, and always in the best possible sound quality. That vision is what gave birth to the 1000X series—created to let you immerse yourself in music with uncompromising sound quality and noise cancelling.
Origins & Evolution of 1000X
In 2008, Sony launched the world’s first headphones with digital signal processing noise cancelling: MDR-NC500D.
Since then, we have continued to refine noise cancelling technology in pursuit of an immersive listening experience that lets you focus on music - regardless of your environment. Bringing together that technology and know-how, Sony set its sights on creating “industry-leading noise cancelling headphones.” The result was the first-generation model of the 1000X series, MDR-1000X, launched in 2016.
From that point on, the 1000X series has continued to evolve with noise cancelling and sound quality at its core—delivering uncompromising wireless audio and a new level of immersion.
Technology: Noise Cancelling & Sound Quality
Noise cancelling has evolved beyond simply “cancelling more.”
Through advances in dedicated processors and microphone configurations, the system now analyzes fit and surrounding conditions in real time—automatically adjusting toward an always-optimized sense of quiet.
With each generation, increased processing power has enabled more natural and effective reduction, including mid-to-high frequencies such as voices and everyday sounds.
On the sound quality side, Sony has continually refined driver design and signal processing to achieve uncompromised playback even over wireless. By designing the noise cancelling processor and audio circuitry as an integrated system, we elevate both silence and clarity. In recent years, co-creation with mastering engineers has further expanded this pursuit - aiming to reproduce not only the sound, but the creator’s intent.
Design, Comfort & Lineup
The 1000X series has also continuously advanced comfort, usability, and design—built for everything from commuting to long listening sessions. Through weight reduction, improved fit, pressure-distribution design, and a design language refined generation after generation, it has reached a level of quality that feels natural to use every day.
The lineup has expanded to 6 headband models, 5 in-ear models, and 2 WI models - growing into a series that fits a wide range of lifestyles.
[2016] MDR-1000X (1st generation)

Redefined what wireless could be - the origin of 1000X
A model that squarely addressed the trade-offs created by going wireless (power, RF, enclosure constraints), while still delivering noise cancelling, sound quality, and long-wear comfort together. At a time when "wireless headphones don't sound good / drop out" was a common assumption, it introduced a new benchmark - "quiet and great sound" - and laid the foundation for the 1000X series.
[2017] WF-1000X

The first step toward "no-compromise sound" in true wireless - Sony's first true wireless model
At a time when true wireless was often associated with "simple use," this model introduced a new value proposition: "immerse yourself in music quietly - even in true wireless."
It helped raise expectations for the category. (The interview also notes that active noise cancelling in true wireless was likely a first in the Japanese market.)
[2017] WH-1000XM2

Established 1000X as a true series
This generation advanced noise cancelling from simply "cancelling more" to "optimizing intelligently," automatically adjusting for fit and conditions (including air pressure). It raised the usability baseline for both clear use cases like flying and everyday commuting.
As automatic optimization becomes more sophisticated, experience design becomes critical - detection conditions, switching timing, and ensuring changes feel natural and intuitive to the user. It also required robust tuning so that targeted performance remains consistent even as fit and air pressure conditions change.
[2018] WH-1000XM3

A turning point that cemented "Sony = Noise Cancelling"
By refining the fundamentals, this generation established a new benchmark for "quietness" that later generations would build upon.
[2019] WF-1000XM3

Further evolution of both sound quality and noise cancelling in true wireless—toward a full-fledged NC experience with a dedicated processor
Released as true wireless became the center of the market, this model brought a flagship-class noise cancelling experience to a broader audience. It also significantly expanded "easy-to-use while on the move" experiences - fine ambient sound adjustment (1–20 levels), wind noise reduction, Quick Attention, and more.
[2020] WH-1000XM4

Smarter evolution - adding "intelligence" to sound quality and noise cancelling
This generation significantly refreshed the "inside" - wireless, sound, and processing—while keeping the exterior evolution subtle, further raising the completeness of the overall experience. As a flagship, it reinforced the position of noise cancelling headphones as an everyday essential for commuting, work, and life.
To upgrade the internal performance without dramatically changing the housing, the team focused on elevating circuitry, wireless performance, and processing within existing enclosure constraints - where attention to "invisible" details such as circuit layout and patterns becomes a key differentiator.
[2021] WF-1000XM4

A major leap in earbud refinement—from "listening" to an experience you'll keep using every day
Elevated true wireless from a "feature-rich listening device" to an everyday tool you can rely on - improving call quality, comfort, and day-to-day usability alongside flagship noise cancelling and sound quality.
[2022] WH-1000XM5

A bold redesign of both sound and design - toward the next 1000X
As a flagship, it redefined expectations beyond noise cancelling—strengthening calling, fit, and operation as part of the total experience.
Target product vision: a "reliable anywhere" headphone—built on noise cancelling and high sound quality, and extended through comfort, calling, and intuitive operation.
As component configuration evolved (dual processors, more microphones, etc.), the team balanced wearability, weight distribution, and mass-production readiness. Required extensive tuning to enable "automatic optimization" in real time - reflecting both fit and environmental changes—while controlling signals from 8 microphones.
[2023] WF-1000XM5

A complete refresh of mic, processor, and driver - raising "The Best" noise cancelling performance in true wireless
A model that further elevates both "quiet" and "expressiveness," turning time spent commuting, working, or studying into immersive time. Easier to tailor your sound with EQ, and enhanced with new features for long-term, confident use - such as Safe Listening (automatic volume control / visualization of noise reduction).

From "listening" to experiencing the creator's intent

While further polishing the series' long-standing commitment to sound quality, this generation also adds new features aligned with evolving needs—bringing both "inheritance" and "challenge" forward together.
Translating the "target sound" gained through co-creation into a product required delicate adjustments across both hardware and tuning. Needed to balance higher real-time processing load from 12 microphones with wearability, weight, and durability (including the foldable mechanism).
[2026] WF-1000XM6

A new "world-class" benchmark for earbuds - beyond what seemed possible
An ambitious evolution that pushes forward "sound quality," "noise cancelling," and "fit" simultaneously. Sound tuning was refined through co-creation with world-class mastering engineers. To enable finer control, Sony enhanced processing precision (e.g., 32-bit processing) and strengthened DAC performance in the noise cancelling processor (QN3e).
Because NC effectiveness can change with ear shape and how the earbuds are worn, we redesigned the automatic optimization mechanism (Adaptive NC) specifically for earbuds—tuning it to match fit status and environment. Within tight constraints (more microphones, antenna space, etc.), the team also refined the form factor to fit comfortably while reducing wind noise.
