Sony × Hello Kitty
The Story Behind the Sony x Hello Kitty Collaboration Model
“Pursuing Something That Will Be Loved for Years to Come”
Sony has long been dedicated to enriching people's lives through sound, imaging, and technology. Meanwhile, Hello Kitty has remained close to the hearts of people around the world, across generations. Although these two brands may seem quite different, they share a common aspiration: to bring a little more joy and warmth to everyday life.
We spoke with members of the project team to learn more about how the collaboration came to life, from the original concept to the design philosophy behind it.

“Reaching Those Who Have Yet to Experience Sony”
─ How did this collaboration begin?
Yamamoto · Planning / Sony
The idea started with a desire to create an opportunity for people who do not typically interact with Sony products to discover the brand. In particular, we wanted to introduce Sony to new customer segments, such as younger generations and women, who may not have been our traditional audience.
Sanrio has strong connections with exactly these audiences and has been loved by a passionate fan base for many years. We saw potential in that.
For many people, Sanrio characters are more than just characters. They bring a little brightness to everyday life. Similarly, Sony strives to enrich people's daily experiences through entertainment and technology. The collaboration was inspired by the shared value of wanting to stay close to people's lives and be loved for a long time.

What were your initial thoughts and impressions when Sony first approached you about this collaboration?
Designer / Sanrio
We were genuinely excited and strongly felt that this was a collaboration we would love to pursue together.
Just as Sony sees great potential in Sanrio's characters, we also believe this collaboration provides an opportunity for long-time Sony customers to discover and engage with Sanrio characters in a new way.
By combining Sony's craftsmanship, which has created products loved by people around the world for generations, with Hello Kitty, we see the potential for a unique synergy. Above all, we believe this collaboration can create something truly special that will be loved by many customers and fans.

“Creating Something People Would Want to Carry Every Day”
─ How did the ideas for the pouch and tote bag come about?
Yamamoto · Planning / Sony
From the very beginning, one of our key goals was to create more moments of happiness in customers' everyday lives.
Sony products are already part of people's daily routines through music, photography, communication, and entertainment. That is why we wanted the collaboration goods to be items people would naturally want to carry with them every day.
We aimed to combine the joy of spending time with Hello Kitty and the practicality of carrying Sony products. The pouch and tote bag were developed as items that could deliver both experiences.
“Blending the Worlds of Two Iconic Brand”
─ What was the most challenging aspect of the design process?
Miyano & Inukai · Designers / Sony
The greatest challenge was finding the right balance between Hello Kitty's signature charm and Sony's simple and minimalist design.
Sony products are built upon design principles that have been cultivated over many years, including a black-and-silver visual identity and a strong emphasis on horizontal and vertical balance.
Rather than scattering Hello Kitty designs elements freely across the product, we incorporated them withing a structured "frame code" . This textile approach allowed Hello Kitty's charm and Sony's design philosophy to coexist harmoniously. Our goal was to create products that would feel naturally connected to Sony devices when displayed together.
For the headphone pouch, we faced the challenge of preserving Hello Kitty's iconic shape while also ensuring a comfortable fit for the compatible headphones. Achieving both visual appeal and practical functionality required extensive testing and refinement.

― What was your first impression when you saw the merchandise designs, and how do they differ from previous Sanrio character merchandise and designs?
Designer / Sanrio
While preserving Hello Kitty’s timeless charm and cuteness, I felt the designs were sophisticated and refined, making them easy for adults to incorporate into their everyday lives.
In particular, the use of embroidered Hello Kitty fabric on the products was a fresh and unique expression that has rarely been seen in previous Sanrio character merchandise. The products are crafted with great attention to detail, and I was impressed by the high level of quality when I saw them in person.
I believe these products successfully showcase Hello Kitty’s charm and will help introduce her appeal to even more people.

─ “Looking back on the development process, what stands out most in your memory?”
Miyano & Inukai · Designers / Sony
Without compromising Hello Kitty’s distinctive character, we repeatedly refined the design to achieve both practicality and ease of use as a case for Sony products.
From the size and shape of the goods to the subtle details of her ears and ribbon, we carefully fine-tuned every element through repeated prototyping.
To ensure the designs stayed true to Hello Kitty's character, we brought together a team of passionate Sanrio fans whose shared love and attention to detail helped shape every aspect of the collaboration.

― Was there anything particularly memorable during the development process?
Designer / Sanrio
When reviewing the key visual, I was particularly impressed by how successfully it balanced Hello Kitty’s signature charm, a core element of the Sanrio brand, with the simple and sophisticated aesthetic that Sony sought to achieve.
The final key visual strikes a wonderful balance, retaining Hello Kitty’s charm within a refined and mature design. I feel it has become something that can appeal not only to existing Hello Kitty fans, but also to people who may not typically engage with the character.

Capturing the Moment Hello Kitty Meets Sony
─ We heard there was a special story behind the key visual as well.
Koseki · Designer / Sony
We wanted to protect the sense of kawaii that Sanrio has carefully nurtured over the years. Respect for the character and appreciation for Hello Kitty fans were always at the forefront of our minds throughout the creative process.
At the same time, we were particularly focused on creating a visual that would remain true to Hello Kitty's charm while reflecting Sony's simplicity and design aesthetic.
In collaborations, there is often a temptation to include more elements. This time, however, we intentionally embraced negative space. Rather than letting one brand overshadow the other, we sought a balance where the distinct appeal of both brands could naturally coexist.
What we wanted to portray was “the very first moment” when Hello Kitty encounters Sony.
The scene depicts Hello Kitty enjoying one of her everyday moments, playing with alphabet building blocks. Into that familiar world, Sony quietly enters, opening the door to new experiences, discoveries, and excitement.
Rather than prescribing a single interpretation, we hope each customer can imagine their own story behind the collaboration.
