What happens when a sports photographer steps into the world of birding? Following Sony Malaysia's Basic Birding Workshop, we spoke with participant Yau about his photography journey, his growing interest in wildlife photography and the lessons he took away from the workshop.
Journey into Photography
Yau's photography journey began as a second shooter during his high school days before purchasing his first camera, the Sony α6000, in 2023. Since then, his passion has evolved from capturing great-looking images to documenting meaningful moments and emotions.
How did you get started in photography?
I started shooting events as a second shooter during high school. In 2023, I bought my first camera, the Sony α6000, and began taking photography more seriously.
"My goal used to be taking the best-looking pictures. Now, it's about capturing genuine interactions, emotions, and moments."
Why sports photography?
Sports became my specialty because I enjoy capturing fast-paced action. Photographing football, basketball, and motorsports taught me how to anticipate movement and capture decisive moments.

What sparked your interest in bird photography?
It started when I witnessed a bird carrying worms back to feed its chicks.
"It wasn't just about getting the shot. It was watching that interaction unfold naturally."

That moment sparked my interest in wildlife photography and birding.
Why did you join Sony's Basic Birding Workshop?
I wanted to build a stronger foundation in bird photography and learn more about bird behavior and fieldcraft.
"It went above and beyond my expectations."
The workshop helped me better understand both birding and wildlife photography.
Among the many photographs captured during the workshop, one stood out.
A colorful golden pheasant displaying its vibrant feathers became his favorite image of the day.

The image represented more than just technical success, reflecting the lessons learned throughout the workshop.
Rather than focusing solely on camera settings, he learned the importance of observing behavior, understanding light, and patiently waiting for the right moment.
What gear are you currently using?
• Sony α7 V
• FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS Ⅱ
• FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS
The α7 V's tracking performance and the 300mm's additional reach have been especially useful for both sports and bird photography.

What's next?
I hope to continue improving my bird photography, join photography competitions, and one day photograph wildlife during an African safari.
"Bird photography is raw and unpredictable. That's what keeps me coming back."
